NICE Guideline NG93 - Learning disabilities and behaviour that challenges: service design and delivery

Positive behavioural support is a person-centred approach that uses a multi-element format to better understand and so reduce behaviour that challenges. It can include changing the person's environment, developing their skills, providing focused support and developing reactive strategies.

A method of addressing challenging behaviour, with the aim of improving a person's quality of life. It involves looking at things from the perspective of the person whose behaviour is challenging, working out how their environment could be improved, and helping them to learn new skills. People with challenging behaviour are treated with dignity and are not punished.
