With our brand-new Graduate Programme well underway we have been speaking to our newest graduate recruit, Alex Evelyn, about his time on the programme so far:
“It’s been just been just over six weeks since I started at Socitm Advisory on their Inaugural Graduate Programme and so far, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. The diversity of work has meant that no two days have been the same. I’ve shadowed experts in their field, gained an invaluable insight into how local government & public services are run and been introduced to people from across the business.
From day one everyone has been supportive and has pushed me to achieve my best. I have a fantastic line manager in Jack Fowler who has assisted me in setting ambitious yet achievable targets. My initial weeks had me learning the basics, where I was fortunate enough to shadow members of the Project Management Office, allowing me to understand the breadth of our business and the company’s ethos, values and approach.
At the end of my first rotation, I sat down with the Chief Operating Officer, Matt Gascoigne, and had a candid discussion about my experience and what I found useful, where I needed to develop my learning and what I felt could be added to improve the programme (and my experience of it). I was pleased that a business director was prepared to give up nearly two hours of their time to make sure that I had settled in. It was refreshing to be able to share my thoughts and see that my ideas were being taken on board.
I’ve had a great number of opportunities to get involved in a variety of projects so far. At Birmingham City Council I am fully embedded as part of our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Programme Team and I am working with key stakeholders to develop process maps and matrices to understand existing HR and procurement structures. I have also been able to assist Coventry City Council with their digital maturity assessment and contributed to the writing and proof reading of their final report. I am now developing a booklet to help new graduates find their feet in the first few weeks of joining. There really is no end to what you could be doing and that is what makes the scheme such an exciting programme to be a part of.
I’ve been able to join several great networking opportunities within the company. My first was the Company quarterly update – this is where both permanent and associate staff can listen to the Senior Leadership Team and ask questions about Socitm Advisory’s future plans. It’s an open environment where staff can have a say on the company’s progression and can meet with colleagues from all over the business.
If you’ve just finished your degree or have been working for several years (as I had) but now want a change, are public spirited and have a desire to improve services then Socitm Advisory might be the place for you.”
Our Graduate Programme is now open, and applications are considered on a rolling basis.
